Skin Problems in Dogs and Cats
ALLERGIES - a brief overview and how our products can help.
Of all the problems you might consult your vet about, skin conditions make up a huge proportion of a vet’s day to day caseload. Of these, many veterinary consultations are related to skin allergies, with the remaining skin problems associated with fleas and mites and more obscure problems like autoimmune conditions (such as lupus or pemphigus) and problems related to various lumps and bumps.
Here we will concentrate on allergies and look how our Colloidal Silver products can help, but first it is helpful to try and work out what exactly the problem is. As always, consult your vet if you are unsure what is going on or if things are not getting any better.
SKIN ALLERGIES - what causes an allergy?
Your dog or cat’s body has a complex immune system designed to fight infections and remove foreign substances. Sometimes, this system can overreact to typically harmless substances, leading to allergies. These allergy triggering substances, referred to as allergens, can cause various conditions, including skin issues, respiratory problems like asthma, as well as digestive problems such as diarrhoea and colitis.
Reactions to multiple allergens are common and can include grasses, pollens, moulds, house dust mites, forage mites, flea saliva, wheat gluten and various proteins such as chicken and beef. Some of the allergic reactions are strongly seasonal; pollens will be linked with the spring, grasses in the summer and moulds in the autumn. Flea allergy dermatitis can be a problem all year round but peaks in the late summer and allergic reactions to house dust and forage mites can also be a problem all year but peaking over the winter when the exposure is greater, the heating is turned up and the windows closed.
ALLERGIC BASED DERMATITIS or ECZEMA – what to look for.
- Flea Allergy Dermatitis
This is a common problem in both dogs and cats and triggered by a reaction to the saliva of the fleas which they inject when they feed. Some animals are so sensitive to fleas that just a single bite can trigger an intense allergic skin reaction, causing marked itching and scratching. Flea allergy reactions tend to affect the area around the pelvis, above the tail base and around the back legs including the insides of the legs. You may notice small sores and scabs, together with loss of hair and raw areas. Scratching, licking, rubbing and bottom scooting are common. You may even see live fleas and small black gritty material in the skin which is actually flea poo. Some animals will have more expensive skin symptoms which can affect the whole of the body. Treating the flea infestation as well as the skin is essential in managing the condition.
- Other Skin Allergies - atopic dermatitis or eczema
This is usually caused either by inhaled allergens (such as pollens), by contact directly with the skin (such as grasses) or ingested allergens (such as wheat gluten or proteins). In general, the symptoms will vary between animal to animal but often the parts of the body affected, and the actual appearance of the skin will be different from that seen with a flea allergy.
Symptoms can include:
- General itching scratching, rubbing, and biting
- Areas of inflamed red skin usually affecting the underside of the body, armpits and inside the thighs and under the neck
- Red ears and recurrent ear infections that keep coming back
- Itchy red feet, both between the toes and on the underside between the pads. Often the wrist (carpal) and ankle (hock) areas may also appear very inflamed, and you may even see recurrent small swellings appearing between the toes. These are interdigital cysts that swell and burst
- The appearance of hot spots in dogs, with red, angry oozing skin patches which crust over and matt the hair
- In cats, and particularly with food allergies, the symptoms can be severe and debilitating with severe crusty and wet eczema patches especially around the head area, but which can appear all over the body
Long standing cases may also develop other symptoms:
- Thickened, elephant-like skin
- Seborrhoeic, greasy, smelly skin
- Flaky, scaly areas that look like dandruff
- Secondary bacterial infections of the skin called pyoderma
- Change in skin pigmentation from pink to black
- Loss of hair
Your vet will be able to take samples of skin (a biopsy) or blood to help establish a diagnosis or even refer you to a veterinary dermatologist if it is proving difficult to determine what is going on.
